What is a Web-Based Learning Tool (WBLT)?

Monitor: Colin

Final Definition (for Summer Course)
A WBLT is an interactive, web based activity that allows users to do one or more of: manipulate variables, interact with multi-media, review, learn, or practice skills or knowledge. The user usually has control various aspects of the activity such as the pacing.

Key Characteristics of WBLTs

- Visual (attractiveness) / Audio component (Mutlimedia)
- Interactivity
- Learner Control (autonomy)
- Visual supports / scaffolding
- Contextualized (purpose of WBLT well defined)

What we would like to see

- Assessment component
- Situated into some real world situation
- Inquiry based approach / exploration
- Ease of use (understanding /Written instruction - to guide user / learning goals/Demo - how to use?)

Qualities of a Good WBLT
- Interactivity - student should be actively engaged
- Control - should have some mechanism for student control (pace, revision, content, etc...)
- Visual attractiveness to get the student "hooked"
- Time and location flexibility (synchronous and asynchronous)
- Reduce overall learning time
- Flexibility and convenience to learners
- Easily updated

Possible Definitions of WBLT
Definition A (from class)
An interactive web-based resource providing a multi-sensory approach to learning for learners while promoting varied methods of assessment (including self assessment)

Definition B (from class)
An interactive web based program (using text, audio, animation, image) that supports learning by enhancing, scaffolding and guiding the cognitive processes of learning. It is self-paced.

Definition C (Mike)
A WBLT is a digital programme that provides its user with the opportunity to learn with technology. It is easy to use and interactive, allowing the learner to progress at his/her own pace. It can be used to introduce a concept, practice a skill, review a topic, or to investigate what happens when specific parameters are changed. Its audio-visual format complements the individual’s learning style.

Revised: A WBLT provides its user with the opportunity to learn specific concepts with technology in the classroom. Its audio-visual format is engaging and the learning occurs in a context that is meaningful to its user. It is easy to use and interactive, allowing the learner to progress at his/her own pace. It can be used to introduce a concept, practise a skill, review a topic, or to investigate what happens when specific parameters are changed.

Definition D (Naseem)
WBLT (web-based learning tool) is a combination of course materials and instructional methods delivered by the internet. It provides easy access (free from time and place constraints), good interactivity and real-world applications
